The Online PhD Experience: A Qualitative Systematic Review

The online doctoral population is growing steadily worldwide, yet its narratives have not been thoroughly reviewed so far. We conducted a systematic review summarizing PhD students’ experiences. ERIC, WoS, Scopus, and PsycInfo databases were searched following PRISMA 2020 guidelines limiting the results to peer-reviewed articles of last 20 years, yielding 16 studies eligible. A thematic synthesis showed that students are generally satisfied with their programs, but isolation, juggling work family roles, financial pressures main obstacles. supervisory relationship determines quality experience, whereas strong sense community helps get ahead. Personal factors such as motivation, personality, skills modulate fit PhD. conclude pursuing doctorate more isolating than face face, might encounter additional challenges regarding supervision process study/life balance. Accordingly, this help faculty, program managers, prospective better understand doctorates’ pressing concerns poor well-being high dropout rates.
